PAW*32 - Crochet Camp Shorts
PAW*32 - Crochet Camp Shorts
The Crochet Camp Shorts. Like my crochet vest from week 8, this piece focuses on reimagining a standard article of clothing. The cut and details of these shorts are commonly found on outdoor and military garments but are finished in a way to evoke a sense of peace and innocence, rather than ruggedness. Similarities were achieved by referring to a standard camp short pattern, which tends to be wider in the leg and shorter in the inseam, and adding external utility pockets at the hip. The primary design detail of this piece is the accent crochet piping, which can be found throughout the garment. I decided to use crochet as the central design detail as an ode to my late grandmothers, who commonly had crochet doilies strewn about their houses, which I remember fondly growing up. There is something about the soft intricate look and feel of the crochet that I gravitate towards, especially when paired with the light pinstripe seersucker fabric of choice. It is all so busy and simple at the same time. This same detail can also be found on the rear of the garment, which acts as pocket stays for the back pockets. This set is over 20 weeks in the making, and I have to say I'm glad I took a step to finish it in a way that I saw fit.
