My personal take on a traditional biker vest. Commonly worn for protection by motorcycle riders, a leather biker jacket is often associated with strength, grit, grunge, and more punk influences over time. Though I appreciate the history and expression of what a leather biker vest stands for, I wanted to try to come up with a version that speaks more to my emotions and voice as a designer. The result is a loose-fitting vest outfitted with a lined shirting fabric and quilted liner rather than leather, crochet piping rather than metal hardware, an asymmetrical neckline that hangs at the shoulder, and welted hanging D-shaped pockets. I found myself drawing inspiration from military surplus like paratrooper wear, which can be seen in the details and quilted liner, which evokes a sense of protection, while also still providing an air of softness with the padded feel and soft muted tones. The primary design detail of his vest is the contrast crochet piping which was inspired by the doileys used by both sets of my grandparents when I was growing up. While on the body, this detail reminds me of a faint feeling of home.
