The Torii bag is the culmination of everything I have learned about design and construction in the past few months. Unlike many other designs in the collection that took weeks to design, the main concept for the Torii bag just came to me one night while I was designing. I knew I wanted to made an all purpose day bag with a snap rope closure at the opening. After that it was just a matter of refining the details. I started with a heavyweight cotton and stiff cotton webbing. That did not hold well. Instead I tried Canvas with softer cotton webbing; It worked much better. The main functionality of this bag also goes hand in hand with the design inspiration. The name for this bag comes from traditional Torii arches commonly found in Japan. The geometry and structure of those arches is what inspired the placement of the webbing. This placement also allows for the bag to be worn as a sling, a backpack, and a side bag. Those close to me have described it as the perfect beach bag, which I won’t disagree with, seeing how closely that idea ties into the theme of this collection.

Materials

Constructed out of a study 8 oz cotton duck canvas that provides structure to the piece. Accent webbing is cotton, and bag opening is finished around ½’ nautical roping. The bag closure uses sewn in velcro. This is a one compartment bag that is fully lined with a complimentary color Kona cotton (cream for neutral). 2 front loops are added to clip in additional gear.
